Grotta del Monte dei Pini, also known as “Grotta a S del Monte dei Pini”, is located near Trieste. Its entrance, once a place of mystery and legend, is now marked on maps with precise coordinates: 45.67066135 latitude and 13.85243487 longitude. The cave’s story is one of rediscovery and exploration. Local inhabitants of Gropada have known about the Grotta del Monte dei Pini for centuries. Legends painted it as a deep chasm, a hiding place for smugglers and their illicit goods. At some point, the entrance was sealed with a massive boulder, a collaborative effort by the men of the village. In 1924, the Associazione XXX Ottobre reopened the Grotta del Monte dei Pini. They found a cave of speleological interest, but lacking any remarkable features. On the same day, they resealed the entrance. Decades later, the Gruppo Grotte “Carlo Debeljak” reopened the Grotta del Monte dei Pini once more. Their efforts revealed a network of passages and caverns, some adorned with beautiful concretions. The cave’s survey, as of 1992, shows a total length of 68 meters and a depth of 30 meters. Inside the Grotta del Monte dei Pini, the main cavern’s floor bears the marks of flowing water, a meandering channel carved by rainfall. A small stream flows through the cave after heavy precipitation. High on the eastern wall, a narrow passage, about ten meters long, leads to a small, concretion-rich chamber. Within the cave, remnants of a different time lie buried: bovine bones, micromammal remains, and charred wood fragments. These findings hint at the cave’s past, a time when both animals and perhaps humans sought shelter within its depths. The Grotta del Monte dei Pini remains a testament to the enduring power of exploration. Each rediscovery adds another layer to its story.
