Imagine artisans since the Edo period honing their craft. This is Arakawa. It is one of Tokyo’s special wards. Arakawa is a place where history and modern life intertwine.

Arakawa calls itself Arakawa City in English. It is home to about 216,900 people. The ward covers just over 10 square kilometers.

Arakawa is northeast of central Tokyo. It is a long narrow shape. Sumida River marks its northern edge.

Once, Arakawa was mainly farmland. The Tokugawa’s largest execution ground was built here in 1651. Factories later sprung up along the waterfront during the Meiji era. Arakawa became one of Tokyo City’s 35 wards in 1932.

During World War II, a prisoner-of-war camp existed in Arakawa. Hundreds of Allied soldiers were held there. They were liberated in September 1945.

What makes Arakawa special? Perhaps it is the Toden Arakawa Line. This is Tokyo’s oldest streetcar line. A ride on the Sakura Tram feels like a journey into old Japan. The Toden Arakawa Line runs from Minowabashi to Waseda. You can see nostalgic yellow streetcars.

Arakawa is known for its skilled craftspeople. Many still practice traditional skills. They are registered as holders of intangible cultural assets.

Arakawa also offers green spaces. Visit Arakawa Nature Park. It is the ward’s largest park. Shioiri Park is another great option. It has an observation deck and a playground.

Several train lines serve Arakawa. Nippori Station is a major hub. The JR Yamanote Line passes through here.

Don’t miss Susano Shrine. It was built in 795. The annual Tenno Festival in June is a highlight.
