West of Sun Chui Estate lies Tin Sam Village. A Punti walled village Tin Sam boasts a rich history dating back to the late Ming Dynasty. Imagine its sturdy walls protecting its inhabitants. The Choi Wai Leung Tsang and Liu clans called Tin Sam home. A moat once surrounded Tin Sam. It was later filled becoming a fish pond.

Tin Sam’s connection to the Che Kung Temple in Tai Wai is fascinating. The village initially managed the temple. However a lawsuit against the Kau Yeuk a regional organization resulted in a loss of managerial rights. The Kau Yeuk presented evidence of their temple renovation contributions. Rhymed couplets inscribed on the temple entrance confirmed their claim. Nine Sha Tin villages now jointly manage the temple though Tin Sam retains certain worship privileges.

Tin Sam’s history isn’t just about politics. The village also celebrates a Da Jiu Festival every ten years. The festival was celebrated in 2006 and again in 2016. The village is a recognized village under the New Territories Small House Policy.

Within Tin Sam’s walls stand significant historical structures. The Choi Ancestral Hall also known as Chung Kwong Family Hall dates back to the 1920s. The Leung Ancestral Halls two ancestral houses largely rebuilt are now occupied by tenants. The Liu Ancestral Hall and the Entrance Gate a Qing Dynasty structure remain. Notice the two rectangular holes above the gate’s front doorways. These were for both feng shui and security purposes.
