“Picture a bustling port, not like the one you see today, but a historical hub teeming with life.” This is Old Port Tampa. Once the heart of Tampa’s maritime activity, Old Port Tampa played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s destiny.

Established in 1885, Old Port Tampa owes its existence to Henry B. Plant’s vision. Tampa Bay’s shallow waters posed a challenge for large ships. Plant extended his railroad line to the southwestern tip of the Interbay Peninsula. This created a new port several miles away from the main port.

To accommodate visitors, Plant built the St. Elmo Inn and the larger Port Tampa Inn. The Port Tampa Inn was unique. It stood directly on the bay on stilts. Guests could fish right from their windows.

Old Port Tampa became the primary embarkation point for the Spanish-American War in 1898. Over 33000 visitors flooded the area. Military officers, soldiers, nurses, and war correspondents all passed through. Even notables like Teddy Roosevelt and Clara Barton graced Old Port Tampa with their presence. Roosevelt and his Rough Riders made their way to Cuba from here. Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, also spent time in Old Port Tampa.

The port’s significance diminished after dredging projects made the main Port of Tampa accessible. Yet, Old Port Tampa remained vital. It became the main entry point for fuel for Tampa International Airport and MacDill Air Force Base.

In 1961, the city of Port Tampa was annexed by Tampa. However, the community continued to celebrate its heritage. In 1993, a centennial celebration featured home tours and a block party. This took place in the Spanish-American War Memorial Park.

The former Commerce Bank Building stands as a testament to the community’s spirit. Saved from demolition, it now houses the Port Tampa City Library. The library’s second floor features Tampa’s Maritime Reading Room. This room showcases artifacts, books, and coastal maps.

Henry Plant’s investment company founded only one other community besides Old Port Tampa. That community is Belleair, near Clearwater. Theodore Roosevelt stayed in a Port Tampa home before embarking for Cuba. Even Hulk Hogan, known then as Terry Bollea, grew up in Port Tampa. He attended Robinson High School.

Today, Old Port Tampa stands as a reminder of Tampa’s rich maritime past. It’s a place where history comes alive. A place where the echoes of soldiers, innovators, and everyday people still resonate. Though time has passed, the spirit of Old Port Tampa endures.
