“A military barracks for 2000 men? Right here?” you might exclaim in disbelief. It’s a fair question, standing before the grand Karlínská kasárna! This imposing five-story structure, built in the heart of Karlín, doesn’t scream “military barracks” at first glance. Yet, for over a century, it housed thousands of soldiers and bore witness to a fascinating tapestry of history. The Karlínská kasárna was born from necessity in the mid-19th century. The city’s existing military housing was inadequate, pushing the royal court to commission a new, large-scale barracks. Constructed between 1846 and 1849, the Karlínská kasárna became a symbol of the empire’s might, dwarfing other structures in scale and ambition. Initially named Ferdinandova kasárna after Emperor Ferdinand I, it later adopted the name Karlínská kasárna Jana Žižky z Trocnova in 1918. Today, it stands as a testament to changing times, a cultural hub buzzing with creativity. But echoes of its military past linger in its grand facade and expansive courtyard. You can almost hear the tramp of soldiers’ boots and the sound of trumpets calling out orders!
