Picture this a sprawling landscape dotted with lakes and forests. This is Tyresö a municipality nestled in Stockholm County. We stand before a testament to history Tyresö Palace.

Tyresö’s story begins long ago. The first humans arrived around the 3rd millennium BC. Permanent settlements appeared much later around the 7th century. Graves and other remnants remain from this era.

The Tyresö estate itself dates back to the 14th century. It reached its zenith in the 17th century encompassing almost the entire municipality. This period saw the construction of Tyresö Palace in 1636 and Tyresö Church in 1640.

Tyresö was once a vital industrial hub. Watermills harnessed the power of streams and lakes. Rolling mills gristmills forges paper mills sawmills and a brickworks thrived. The waterwheels in the municipal coat of arms symbolize these hydropower facilities. Sadly none of the original watermills survive today. Only a hydroelectric power plant at Uddby remains. It’s a unique survivor in the Stockholm area.

The 20th century brought significant changes. The vast Tyresö estate was divided into plots. Summer cottages began springing up especially in Brevik. Construction surged in the early decades. From the 1950s onwards many cottages transitioned into year-round homes.

Bollmora experienced explosive growth particularly after the 1959 Lex Bollmora legislation. This allowed municipal real estate companies to operate outside their own municipalities. Bollmora Centrum a municipal centre opened in 1965. It was later enclosed and renamed Tyresö Centrum in the 1990s. The Million Programme also left its mark on Tyresö notably in Bollmora. Many apartment buildings are a product of this ambitious initiative.

Tyresö’s population has boomed. It grew from approximately 5000 to over 44000. A large wildfire in 1999 devastated about 10% of Tyresta National Park.

Tyresö isn’t divided into administrative subdivisions. However there are three main districts. Bollmora in the northwest is home to a mix of buildings. Trollbäcken in the west is primarily comprised of detached houses. Gamla Tyresö in the east and south features various housing types along with summer cottages. It also houses Tyresö Palace and Church. A large forest including part of Tyresta National Park is located here.

Today Tyresö is a thriving community a blend of historical significance modern development and stunning natural beauty. The legacy of watermills palaces and forests lives on. The unique spirit of Tyresö remains.
