Once upon a time Katoomba Baptist Church stood as a beacon of faith. It rose from the efforts of a determined community. The early Baptists in New South Wales valued their independence. They avoided financial help from the State. They expanded through their own hard work. Most were lower middle-class people. They included small farmers, shopkeepers and tradesmen.
The Bathurst Street Church in Sydney assisted struggling congregations. In 1886, the first Baptist meeting in the Blue Mountains took place. It was in a Blackheath cottage. A small mission hall followed in 1888. From these meetings, the Katoomba Baptists organised in 1916.
Mr. J.A. Packer led the Katoomba congregation. He was also President of the Baptist Union in NSW. Mrs. W. Buckingham was a generous donor. The Foundation Stone was laid on Waratah Street on October 2nd, 1916. Katoomba Baptist Church was built in the Federation Gothic style. The formal opening happened on New Year’s Day, 1917. A public tea followed in the Salvation Army Hall. One hundred and twenty people attended. Local ministers from various denominations joined in.
Katoomba Baptist Church is one of the oldest churches in the Blue Mountains region. To this day, it serves Christ loyally. It advances His Kingdom. It remains faithful to its historic Reformed Baptist foundations. The church anticipates its future ministry joyfully. It continues its service to God. It serves the people of the Blue Mountains. The church’s essential purpose has always been to magnify the LORD. It has always exalted His name together.
