Noyes Recreation Center

“A community garden? In the heart of the city?” a young boy asked, pointing towards Noyes Recreation Center. Noyes Recreation Center isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub nestled at the corner of 10th and Franklin Street, NE in Washington D.C. It’s a place where the laughter of children mingles with the rhythmic thud of basketballs and the quiet rustle of leaves in the community garden. Originally, Noyes Recreation Center was part of a larger 1.1-acre park, sharing space with Noyes Elementary School. Imagine children rushing out of school, eager to explore the playground or join a pick-up game on the multipurpose field. The park, known as Noyes Park, slopes gently westward toward 10th Street, basking in the sunlight. In 2012, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), in partnership with the Department of General Services (DGS), embarked on a mission to revitalize Noyes Park. A million-dollar project transformed the space into a state-of-the-art recreation center, complete with adult fitness equipment, a plaza for community gatherings, and even picnic tables and grills for family barbecues. Construction began in the spring of 2013 and wrapped up by winter of that same year, bringing to life a vision of a true community hub. Now, Noyes Recreation Center boasts a playground designed for all ages, a walking path winding through landscaped greenery, and a community message board connecting neighbors. It’s more than just a recreation center. It’s the heart of the community, a testament to the power of partnership and the importance of green spaces in urban life.
