From the heart of Würzburg, between the grandeur of the Residenz and the towering Dom, rises Chemie. Chemie isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to centuries of scientific breakthroughs, a crucible where brilliant minds forged discoveries that reshaped our understanding of the world. The story of Chemie at the University of Würzburg begins in the 18th century. Prince-Bishops, recognizing the growing importance of the field, mandated chemistry lectures and experiments for medical students. This marked the beginning of chemistry’s journey towards becoming an independent discipline. By 1865, chemistry had earned its own dedicated space: a new institute building nestled in this very spot. Johann Joseph von Scherer, a collaborator of the renowned Justus von Liebig, became Chemie’s first full professor. His work on biological pigments and proteins laid the groundwork for clinical chemistry as we know it. Scherer’s successor, Adolph Strecker, further cemented Chemie’s reputation with his groundbreaking amino acid synthesis. He held the first chair of chemistry at the faculty of philosophy. The lineage of brilliance continued with Johannes Wislicenus, whose discovery of “geometrical isomerism” in lactic acid significantly advanced stereochemistry. Then came Emil Fischer in 1885. His seven years at Chemie were remarkably productive. Here, he conducted his Nobel Prize-winning research on sugars. He also first proposed the “Lock and Key Model,” a revolutionary concept that visualized enzyme-substrate interactions. Fischer’s influence secured funding for a new, state-of-the-art Chemie building at Pleicher Ring, later renamed Röntgenring. This building, inaugurated in 1896, boasted cutting-edge facilities. It became a beacon of scientific progress in Germany. From its hallowed halls emerged discoveries in organic synthesis, electrochemistry, and physical organic chemistry under Arthur Hantzsch and Julius Tafel. Even the Nobel laureate Eduard Buchner found a home at Chemie in 1911. Though his time was tragically cut short by World War I, his presence added another layer of prestige to the institute’s growing legacy. The 20th century saw Chemie continue to thrive under directors like Otto Dimroth and F.G. Fischer. Their work on heterocycles, natural products, and physiological chemistry further solidified Chemie’s reputation as a center of excellence. Siegfried Hünig’s arrival in 1961 ushered in a new era. Recognizing the need for modern structures, he championed the establishment of independent institutes for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. He also envisioned and planned the chemistry center where Chemie stands today. The new Chemie building, inaugurated in 2013, stands as a symbol of continuous innovation and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of chemical knowledge. This building and the adjacent research building for the Center for Nanosystems Chemistry provide state-of-the-art facilities. They empower researchers to delve into the fascinating world of molecules and materials.
