Imagine a stark staircase. It is not grand but somber. It descends towards an unseen depth. This is the Memorial to the Victims of Communism.
The Memorial to the Victims of Communism stands as a stark reminder. It recalls the suffering endured during Czechoslovakia’s communist regime. The regime held power from 1948 to 1989. It is located at the base of Petřín hill in the Malá Strana district.
Unveiled on May 22, 2002, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism is a creation. It is the work of sculptor Olbram Zoubek and architects Jan Kerel and Zdeněk Holzel. The local council and the Confederation of Political Prisoners supported this monument.
Seven bronze statues march down the staircase. Each represents an individual in progressive decay. This decay symbolizes the systematic destruction. It represents the destruction of political prisoners under the Communist government. Despite their broken forms, each statue remains standing. This shows the defiance of the human spirit.
Look closely. A bronze strip bears witness to the scale of repression. It lists the stark numbers. Over 205486 were arrested. More than 170938 were forced into exile. Around 4500 met their end in prison. Furthermore 327 were shot trying to escape and 248 were executed.
A nearby plaque dedicates the Memorial to the Victims of Communism. It honors all victims. These are not only those jailed or executed. It includes those whose lives were ruined by totalitarian despotism.
Note the location of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism. It sits on the axis between Hvĕzdárna. This is on top of Petřín hill and Vítězná street in the valley. This street connects it to the Bridge of May 1 and Národní třída.
The design of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism was carefully chosen. The unveiling was preceded by discussions. Discussions were about the selection procedure and construction costs.
Every year on June 27, a commemoration is held. This marks the execution day of Milada Horáková and others. The Confederation of Political Prisoners of the Czech Republic organizes it.
Despite its significance, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism has faced hostile actions. In 2003, one statue was damaged by an explosive.
