Beneath the flight path of planes descending into Cologne, lies Kiesgrubensee Gremberghoven. This isn’t just any lake. It’s a hidden haven teeming with life, a testament to nature’s resilience amidst the urban sprawl. Kiesgrubensee Gremberghoven, designated a nature reserve in 1989, occupies the northern part of twin gravel pits separated by the A559. A narrow channel connects the two, creating a unique ecosystem. The northern lake, our Kiesgrubensee Gremberghoven, holds a higher protection status due to its rich biodiversity. The southern lake, managed by a fishing club, is designated as a landscape protection area. Kiesgrubensee Gremberghoven is more than just water. Its steep banks, a mix of mature deciduous forest and pioneer species like birch and willow, create a haven for a surprising variety of species. The south bank, however, tells a different story. Well-worn from summer swimmers, it shows the impact of human activity on this delicate environment. Imagine the vibrant green of the common wall lizard, basking in the sun on the eastern bank, a hotspot for rare sand lizards and dry grasslands. This area, slowly being overtaken by encroaching shrubs, is crucial for their survival. Kiesgrubensee Gremberghoven is also a paradise for birdwatchers. Seventy-two bird species have been recorded here, with twenty-eight actively breeding. The endangered bullfinch calls this place home, alongside species from the North Rhine-Westphalia warning list like the kingfisher and goshawk. Even the globally responsible red kite, classified as endangered in the region, frequents Kiesgrubensee Gremberghoven for sustenance. In the winter, the lake becomes a refuge for waterfowl. Common goldeneye, tufted duck, cormorant, and grey heron are frequent visitors as long as the water remains ice-free. Year-round residents include the coot and the ever-vigilant kingfisher. The northern island, teeming with balsam and hybrid poplars, provides a nesting ground for cormorants and grey herons. Beneath the surface, a hidden world thrives. Surveys conducted in 2007 and 2010 revealed rare plant species, including stoneworts that led to the designation of the lake as an FFH habitat type. Kiesgrubensee Gremberghoven is a reminder that nature can thrive even in the most unexpected places. It’s a place where the buzz of the city fades, replaced by the rustling of leaves, the calls of birds, and the gentle lapping of water against the shore. A place where a car wreck, discovered by divers after a decade on the lake bed, serves as a silent testament to time’s passage and nature’s reclaiming power.
