Hidden amongst the verdant hills of Turin lies Parco Villa Genero, a place whispering tales of bygone eras. Originally, two separate vineyards graced this hillside: Vigna Colla, acquired by Felice Genero in 1858, and Vigna Baldissero, added by his wife in 1888. Parco Villa Genero wasn’t always a public space. The land, encompassing villas, rustic houses, a chapel, and sprawling gardens, was a private retreat. It wasn’t until 1933, under Mussolini’s fascist regime, that the grounds opened to the public, becoming Parco Villa Genero. Newspapers of the time celebrated the transformation. They described the park as a magnificent respite, accessible to both pedestrians and carriages. Imagine families enjoying picnics beneath the shade of centuries-old trees. Parco Villa Genero spans an impressive 39,000 square meters. Its hilly terrain, crisscrossed by paths and walkways, leads to a breathtaking vista overlooking Turin. At one time, this was a beloved spot for students seeking refuge from the classroom. Sadly, time and neglect have taken their toll. Vandalism and theft have diminished the park’s artistic treasures. Despite this, Parco Villa Genero retains a unique charm. The remnants of its past grandeur hint at a time of elegant villas and vibrant social gatherings. The panoramic view of the city, framed by the distant Alps, is a timeless masterpiece. While the park may need some restoration and increased security, its potential remains undeniable. It waits patiently for a revival that will restore its former glory.
