Childrens Island is a true oasis. It sits right here on the Vltava River in Prague. This island is all about fun and adventure for kids of all ages.
Its history is quite interesting. Back in 1355, people already knew about these islands. The shapes changed with the river. It was once called Maltézský Island. That name came from the Maltese monastery nearby. Later, it even got the nickname “The Jewish Island”. This was because prominent Jewish families owned it. Names like Hykyšův, Funkovský, and Židovský were associated with the island.
The island we see today got its name in the 1960s. That is when the city built a children’s playground. But there is more to the story. The island’s size increased during the construction of the Smíchov floodgates between 1913 and 1916. The south side connected to Petržílkovského Island. A long wall was built on the north side.
Look around. You will see many things to do here. There are playgrounds for all ages. Toddlers enjoy small swings and slides. Older kids can tackle climbing structures. Sports fields abound. You can find basketball courts. Ping-pong tables are available. There are even courts for tennis and soccer. Remember to bring your own equipment. You cannot rent it here.
Notice the segmented foot-bridge. It leads to the island. It was built in 1933. The supports were made for a bridge from Myslíkova Street. That bridge was never built.
Take a walk to the north side. You will find a statue. It represents the Vltava River and its tributaries. Every year on All Souls’ Day, the Vltavan association honors those who drowned in the river. They lay wreaths at the statue.
Childrens Island is more than just a playground. It is a place for families to relax and enjoy nature. The island blends natural beauty and fun activities. You can relax by the river. You can also enjoy a picnic on the grass.
Remember the arched bridge. It is not just for crossing. It is a vantage point. From here you can gaze upon the river’s beauty. The island is open year-round. Hours change depending on the season. Entrance is free.
