“Another gem”, I thought when I first came to St Monica’s. Here we are at St Monica’s Catholic Church in Richmond. It stands as a testament to faith and community. Its story stretches back over a century and a half. Archbishop Polding laid St Monica’s foundation stone in January 1859. Reverend Therry opened and blessed the church on May 4, 1859. Imagine the excitement of that day. The community gathered to celebrate their new place of worship.
St Monica’s is part of the Parish of Richmond. It has been a spiritual home for generations. Additions were made in 1897 and 1954 to accommodate the growing congregation. A new church building was erected in 1982. This shows the enduring spirit of St Monica’s.
St Monica’s celebrated its 150th anniversary on September 19, 2008. Think of all the baptisms, weddings, and masses held here. This church has witnessed countless personal milestones. It has stood as a constant in the lives of many. A tablet on the church records its dedication. It reads that the people of Richmond erected it to the Glory of God. Bishop Heather dedicated it on November 28, 1982.
