What happened to the original plans for Füchlingen? We are standing in a village that was almost completely wiped off the map. In the mid-1960s, the city of Cologne had a radical plan. They wanted to demolish Füchlingen to make way for a green belt. This green belt was supposed to separate the planned industrial rail line along the Rhine from the new residential area of Chorweiler. Imagine the upheaval this plan caused for the residents of Füchlingen. Their entire village, their homes, their history, almost erased! However, the residents of Füchlingen were not ready to give up their homes without a fight. They protested vigorously against the demolition plans. Their persistence paid off. In 1973, the city of Cologne finally backed down and abandoned the project. Füchlingen was saved. Today, Füchlingen still retains its village character. It stands as a testament to the resilience of its people and their determination to preserve their history. The failed demolition plan is a reminder that even in the face of progress, the voice of the people can prevail.
