Lost in time. That’s how Guild Park and Gardens feels. Imagine stepping into a whimsical world where history and art intertwine. Guild Park and Gardens isn’t just a park. It’s a living museum. A testament to the vision of Rosa and Spencer Clark.

This breathtaking Toronto treasure sits on the Scarborough Bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario. Thirty-six hectares of woods waterfront and formal gardens. A unique collection of public art and architectural fragments are here. The park is best known for being the site of the Guild of All Arts. This was an artist’s community founded in 1932 by Rosa and Spencer Clark. During the Depression the Clarks supported many artists. Painters sculptors weavers and potters were welcomed to live and work on their land.

Later the Clarks converted their home into the popular Guild Inn. This became a destination for artists royalty and tourists. By the 1960s Spencer Clark started saving architectural features. He saved them from notable old buildings all demolished before protective laws existed. The Clarks displayed these facades around the gardens. They added outdoor sculptures too. Think of it. A collection of architectural fragments from over 60 buildings. They’re from Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario.

The Clarks’ generosity didn’t stop there. The Greek Theatre a marvel crafted from the marble columns of a 1914 bank stands proudly. Remnants of the Temple Building once Canada’s tallest structure are also here. A fascinating history embedded in every stone. The park’s collection includes iconic pieces like the Bank of Montreal Building’s animal panels. The panels depicting various animals are the work of Jacobine Jones. Twelve panels representing each Canadian province and territory are here. These are topped with a finial from Victoria Park in Niagara Falls. Even a swan sculpture from London England’s Burlington Arcade found its way here.

After the Clarks sold their property in 1978 Guild Park and Gardens went into decline. By 2011 the National Trust for Canada listed the Guild Inn as one of Canada’s Top 10 Endangered Heritage Sites. Thankfully collaborative efforts by the government the local community and the private sector revitalized the park. The Guild Inn building was renovated and expanded. The entire park is undergoing a significant revitalization.
