In 1865 amidst the echoes of the Civil War’s end Mount Jezreel Baptist Church was born. A group from Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in Northwest DC sought a new home. They were tired of the long journey across town. They wanted a church closer to their community. These early members William Shanklin Peter Gray Abraham Blackmore and Catherine Wilson laid the foundation of Mount Jezreel.
Their first services were held in a humble building on Van Street SE. This was the beginning of Mount Jezreel’s story. A story of perseverance resilience and unwavering faith. The congregation quickly outgrew its initial space. They moved to a larger building on G Street SE. Later they found a new home at 7th and L Streets SE nicknamed the “Meat House”. This location reflected their hard work and determination. Their dedicated pastor Rev. Temple S. Robinson tirelessly sought a permanent site.
In 1882 a pivotal moment occurred. The congregation voted to buy a lot at 5th and E Streets SE. They hired Calvin Brent a Black Washingtonian builder and designer. Together they built their new church. The cornerstone was laid in October 1883. This was a joyous occasion for the Mount Jezreel community. It marked a major step toward their dream. Construction was slow due to limited funds. They persevered. Their new edifice was finally dedicated in November 1888. It was a magnificent achievement a testament to their faith. This building was valued at around $20000. This was a significant amount at the time.
Mount Jezreel Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a cornerstone of the community. It offered hope and sermons filled with justice.
