Hidden in plain sight, Mascot is more than just Sydney’s airport. It’s a vibrant suburb with a colourful history, intriguing tales, and a surprisingly dynamic community. Mascot’s story begins long before the roar of jet engines, in 1835, with the first land grants in the area. Back then, market gardens dotted the landscape, supplying fresh produce to the growing city. The construction of Botany Road in 1875 spurred the area’s growth and led to the formation of the municipality known as North Botany in 1888. Imagine the scene in 1904: a bustling racecourse, aptly named Ascot after its British counterpart, attracting crowds eager for the thrill of horse racing. This racecourse occupied land previously owned by the Australian Golf Club. Residents desired a unique identity, and a 1911 referendum offered two choices: Ascot or Booralee. Postal authorities objected to “Ascot,” so “Mascot” emerged as the winner.

In 1920, Mascot’s destiny took a dramatic turn when it was selected as the site for a public airfield. Nigel Love, leasing land from the Kensington Race Club, paved the way for the Commonwealth Government’s purchase of land in 1921. The first regular flights took off in 1924, transforming Mascot into an aviation hub. In 1935, Qantas established its headquarters here, solidifying Mascot’s place in aviation history. The transformation continued as the Cooks River was diverted between 1947 and 1953 to expand the airport’s footprint. This bold move reshaped the landscape and paved the way for Mascot’s future as the home of Sydney Airport.

Mascot isn’t just about planes and runways. It’s a place where history and modernity intersect. The main shopping centre on Botany Road bustles with activity, while the area around Mascot railway station continues to evolve with high-density commercial and residential developments. Look around you: amid the modern buildings, glimpses of Mascot’s past remain. Heritage-listed sites like the Botany Water Reserves on Botany Road and Sewage Pumping Station 38 on General Holmes Drive offer whispers of a bygone era. Mascot’s heart beats to a rhythm all its own. The suburb boasts places of worship like the Knox Presbyterian Church, built in 1911, the Self-Realization Fellowship Sydney Centre, and St Catherine’s Greek Orthodox Church.

Beyond the airport’s perimeter, Mascot reveals its surprising green spaces. L’Estrange Park hosts the Mascot Kings soccer team and Mascot Juniors rugby league teams. Mascot Oval provides a home ground for the Mascot Juniors, while The Lakes Golf Club has welcomed international golf tournaments. Did you know Mascot even has a street named Coward Street? Located near the railway station, it’s now home to modern apartments and offices. Mascot is a study in contrasts, a place where the thrill of international travel meets the quiet charm of local life. It’s a suburb where history is preserved and the future is embraced.
