The scent of old stone and incense hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This isn’t just any church. This is a survivor.
This beautiful church in Warsaw’s Wawer district stands on the site of a previous wooden structure. That wooden church met a tragic end burning down in 1739. The current stone church is a testament to resilience. It’s a story of faith and rebuilding. The construction began in 1880 funded by Aleksandra Potocka. She was the land owner of the nearby Wilanów Palace. Imagine her vision a grand church rising amidst the fields.
Construction ended in 1888. The church was consecrated a symbol of hope in a time of change. Sadly World War I brought hardship. The bells and liturgical vessels were confiscated in 1917. Then came the dark days of World War II. The church was destroyed by artillery fire in 1944. Its once magnificent structure reduced to rubble.
But the story doesn’t end there. The community refused to let their faith be erased. From 1950 to 1976 they worked tirelessly. They painstakingly rebuilt their beloved church. They followed the original 1880 plans. The interior was reconstructed. A new bell tower was constructed. In 1977 the Church of the Assumption was officially recognized. It was added to the register of historical monuments.
Today you can admire the result of this incredible effort. The church’s interior showcases a set of marble altars. These were created in the post-war years based on Stanisław Marzyński’s designs. The main altar features a stunning painting of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The side altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Anthony. Look closely at the stained glass in the presbytery. It depicts the Savior with the host surrounded by angels.
Beyond the church itself. There’s a cemetery. There you’ll find well-preserved tombstones. These belonged to local landowners mostly from the mid-19th century. These tombstones silently narrate past lives. They are a poignant reminder of those who came before us.
