Remember those pins we used to mark places on maps? The Standortmitte Stele does something similar but on a grand scale. These aren’t your average map tacks. They are towering red steles. The steles mark the beginning and end of Autobahn 555.

The Standortmitte Stele is more than just a marker. It is a sculpture connecting Cologne and Bonn. Artist Lutz Fritsch created this visual link. The two identical steles stand tall. They create a connection in our minds. We see one. We remember the other. This connects the cities despite the distance.

Installed in 2008, each Standortmitte Stele reaches a height of 50 meters. They are positioned in traffic circles at either end of the A555. This autobahn is Germany’s oldest. It was built between 1928 and 1932. It ends in a traffic circle. Fritsch placed the steles like pins on a map there. He measured the distance visually.

Fritsch is known as a Raumforscher, a space explorer. He is a sculptor. He is also a poet in space. His artistic intention was to make space and time visible. He wanted people to experience distance as closeness. Each Standortmitte Stele stands alone. But together, they form a whole in our minds. We only see one part. We always know the other exists.

The city even agreed to protect the Standortmitte Stele. The surrounding traffic circles became legally protected artworks.

However, the city of Cologne planned a bridge. It would cut through the traffic circle. This threatens the artwork. Fritsch argues this destroys the overall effect. He calls it a scandal. Critics say the city shows a lack of respect. They do not respect art in public spaces. Some suggest alternative routes were ignored. These routes would have preserved the artwork. The city claims rerouting is too expensive.

The Standortmitte Stele is a symbol. It stands for the region. It connects Cologne and Bonn. It reminds us of the relationship between the cities. It questions how the city treats art. It asks for respect for culture. The Standortmitte Stele invites us to think about space, distance, and connection. It makes us ponder the importance of art. It makes us consider how we value our cultural landmarks.
