How bright it once shone! The Altes Quermarkenfeuer Rotes Kliff stands before you, a silent sentinel against the shifting sands of time. Although it no longer actively guides ships, its story is woven into the very fabric of Sylt’s maritime history. The Altes Quermarkenfeuer Rotes Kliff was built in 1912, a beacon of brick and mortar on the red cliffs of Kampen. It wasn’t meant to stand alone. Its light worked in conjunction with the larger Kampen lighthouse, creating a vital navigational aid for ships navigating the treacherous waters off Sylt’s west coast. The smaller lighthouse, with its distinctive octagonal shape and domed lantern, helped sailors pinpoint their location using the Lister Tief, a deep channel north of the Ellenbogen peninsula. Sadly, its service was short-lived. Lit for the first time in 1913, the Altes Quermarkenfeuer Rotes Kliff was extinguished just a year later when World War I broke out. Though it was relit in 1936, its days were numbered. In 1975, deemed obsolete, the Altes Quermarkenfeuer Rotes Kliff was decommissioned. But the people of Kampen recognized its value, not just as a navigational aid, but as a symbol of their heritage. They fought for its preservation, and in 1976, the municipality purchased the lighthouse. Today, though silent, the Altes Quermarkenfeuer Rotes Kliff stands as a testament to Sylt’s seafaring past. It’s a place where one can almost hear the whispers of the wind carrying tales of stormy seas and the comforting glow of the lighthouse guiding sailors home.
