Inspired by traditional Chinese lanterns, the Xiqu Centre stands as a beacon of culture. It is the first cultural venue in West Kowloon Cultural District. This impressive structure is dedicated to Chinese traditional opera, also known as “xiqu”.

The Xiqu Centre’s design cleverly integrates it into Kowloon’s urban environment. The stacked complex connects seamlessly on different levels. This unique design merges the city with the building.

Inside the Xiqu Centre, professional theatre functions occupy the lower floors. Educational functions are situated above. These include the foyer, a black box theatre, two teahouses and retail outlets.

Note the New Temple Square. This public square sits twenty metres high. It connects to adjacent buildings via a pedestrian bridge. The facade features alternating glass and steel louvres. These depict images of Chinese Opera.

On the ground floor, the transparent foyer of the main theatre offers captivating views. Look upwards to see the multimedia facade. It enlivens the elevated square.

The main theatre offers optimal sightlines and acoustics. Balconies create a compact and intimate atmosphere. This is achieved thanks to huge perimeter columns. They create a vast open space.

High up in the building, you’ll find the black box theatre. It connects with educational functions. Designed for maximum flexibility, it accommodates a wide range of performances.

The Xiqu Centre’s Grand Theatre has 1,073 seats. The Tea House Theatre offers a more intimate setting with 200 seats. There are also eight professional studios and a seminar hall.

If you are new to Chinese opera, consider a 90-minute performance at the Tea House Theatre. It introduces new audiences to this traditional art form. Traditional tea and dim sum are served. It combines cultural and local culinary arts. Performances are held from Wednesday to Sunday.

Don’t miss the chance to taste local dishes. From tea house snacks to modern delights, the Xiqu Centre offers a taste of Hong Kong.

As you explore the Xiqu Centre, notice how every detail reflects Chinese opera’s rich heritage. From the lantern-inspired design to the ‘Qi’ energy flow lighting concept, it’s all carefully planned. The Xiqu Centre isn’t just a building. It’s a living tribute to a timeless art form. It connects the past with the present.
