In 1971, a beacon of faith ignited in Washington, D.C., as the Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance opened its doors. The church, under the steadfast leadership of Elder Emerson L. Brockington, Sr., began its journey on 7th Street, NW. A devastating fire in the 60s forced a relocation to 8th Street, NW. The Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance is part of the Holy Churches of Deliverance, a denomination founded in 1942 in Hampton, Virginia, by Bishop P. B. Gray. The original church began humbly, holding services in the homes of its members. Eventually, they built a church at 532 Shell Road in Hampton. The Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance in D.C. continued to grow. By 1987, through dedicated fundraising and holding services in Brandywine, Maryland, the congregation had saved enough to build their current sanctuary. The present Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance stands at 5900 Chillum Place NE. In June 1987, a significant event marked the church’s history. Elder Emerson Lee Brockington, Sr. was consecrated as Bishop of the Holy Churches of Deliverance. He then oversaw churches across North Carolina, Virginia, and, of course, the District of Columbia. Under Bishop E.D. Brockington’s leadership, Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance expanded its ministries and auxiliaries. This growth allowed the church to better serve its growing congregation and the surrounding community. Today, Mount Calvary Holy Church of Deliverance continues its mission of faith and service. Sunday worship takes place at 11:00 AM, both in person and via Zoom. The church also offers weekly Bible studies on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Friday night prayer via Zoom.
