Let’s step back in time to 1872 and journey to the origins of Bethlehem Baptist Church. This wasn’t just the start of a church. It was the blossoming of a dream nurtured by faithful members breaking away from Macedonia Baptist Church.
These members decided to gather twice a month. Their meeting place was Douglas Hall, nestled at the corner of Nicholas Avenue and Howard Road in Anacostia. Imagine their dedication meeting in those early days. They met in the aftermath of the Civil War.
Rev. Henry Scott became Bethlehem’s guiding light. He was the church’s first pastor. In 1876, Bethlehem took a significant step. They purchased land diagonally across from Douglas Hall. This marked the spot for their first dedicated church building.
Mr. John Anderson played a vital role in this achievement. He was a charter member. He helped significantly with the land purchase and the construction. Bethlehem saw three ministers during the 19th century. They were Rev. Henry Scott, Rev. Phillips, and Rev. Joseph Matthews.
Rev. Matthews stepped into the role of minister in 1892. He served faithfully until his death in 1919. His dedication shaped Bethlehem’s path. After Rev. Matthews’s passing, Rev. John Marshall took the reins. He was a friend and assistant. He served as Bethlehem’s pastor for a year.
In 1921, Rev. Marshall embarked on a new venture. He left Bethlehem. He established Matthews Memorial Baptist Church. This was a branch of Zion. It honored his cherished friend, the late Rev. Joseph Matthews.
The year 1926 brought Rev. James C. Banks to Bethlehem. He was a Bible Scholar hailing from South Boston, Virginia. He dedicated 19 years to serving as minister. In 1945, due to his age, he became Pastor Emeritus. He retired with a lifetime salary. This was a progressive move for Baptist churches at the time.
Several ministers shepherded the church in the following years. Then, in 1954, Rev. Willie B. Allen arrived from Richmond, Virginia. He came to Bethlehem on May 3. Under his guidance, the membership flourished. The groundbreaking for a new church took place on May 9, 1954. Construction commenced in 1955. The cornerstone was laid on May 27, 1955.
Since December 5, 1957, Rev. James E. Coates has been Bethlehem Baptist Church’s pastor. For over six decades, Rev. Coates has been a blessing to the church. Early in his pastorate, the twenty-year mortgage was cleared in just twelve years. This was a moment of great joy and effective leadership. Under his leadership, the church has become a community hub in Anacostia. It’s a center for improvement and social action.
Bethlehem Baptist Church continues to thrive. It practices “Love in Action”. The church actively encourages its members to show love through their deeds. You can join them for worship on Sundays at 10:15 am. There are also weekly services. Bethlehem stands as a testament to faith. It demonstrates resilience and commitment to its community.
