Amidst the bustling streets of São Paulo, a beacon of faith stands tall: Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima. This sanctuary, a testament to devotion and cultural heritage, holds a special place in the hearts of the Portuguese community and beyond. Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima’s story begins in 1931. Count José Vicente de Azevedo donated land in the developing Sumaré neighborhood for a convent and church. Three Franciscan friars, Frei Ignácio Gau, Frei Eduardo Galinier, and Frei João Demarty, took on the construction. The first mass was celebrated in a temporary chapel within the still-under-construction convent in 1932. This convent housed the Seminary of the Third Regular Order of St. Francis. The sanctuary’s dedication to Nossa Senhora de Fátima came about through a Franciscan superior. He visited Fátima, Portugal and was deeply moved by the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. He requested the new temple in Brazil be dedicated to her. In 1935, the cornerstone of Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima was blessed. By 1939, the image of Our Lady of Fátima was enthroned in the high altar. The parish was officially established in 1940. Frei Ignácio Gau became the first parish priest. Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima began attracting devotees, especially the Portuguese community. The main feast day at Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima is May 13th, commemorating the first apparition. Celebrations include masses, processions, and the recitation of the rosary. There’s also a fair with traditional Portuguese food and religious items. The architectural style of Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima echoes Portuguese Baroque. The four cardinal points are symbolized by the walls, the central altar represents the stone, and the roof symbolizes heaven. Stained glass windows adorn the interior. The image of Our Lady of Fátima at the high altar remains the center of devotion. Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima isn’t merely a religious space. It’s a cultural landmark, preserving traditions and keeping the devotion to Our Lady of Fátima alive. Comunidade Nossa Senhora de Fátima offers daily masses, weddings, baptisms, and other religious services. It serves as a spiritual home for a diverse and devoted community.
