From humble beginnings in a school to a city-wide impact. This is the story of the National Community Church. It began in 1996 with just 20 to 25 people meeting at the Joshua R Giddings school. Fire code violations forced a move. They found a new home in AMC Theatres at Union Station. This unconventional location reflected the church’s innovative spirit.
The National Community Church quickly outgrew its movie theatre home. A second service was added in 2001. The congregation. described as young and casually dressed. thrived in the heart of Washington DC. Its growth was phenomenal. In just five years attendance exploded to over 500. The church didn’t just fill seats. It filled lives.
Expansion continued. A second location opened in 2003 at Ballston Common Mall. Pre-recorded sermons connected both sites. The church embraced technology. In 2005 sermons went online as podcasts. This made the church accessible worldwide. This innovative approach was a hallmark of the National Community Church’s success.
A major milestone arrived in 2006. The church invested millions in renovating an abandoned building near Union Station. Ebenezer’s a coffeehouse with church offices and an event space opened. It became one of DC’s best coffeehouses. Ebenezer’s blended community and faith seamlessly.
The church continued to expand its reach. It added locations in Georgetown and Kingstowne. When the Union Station theatre closed in 2009 services moved to Ebenezer’s. New services were launched in Columbia Heights and Potomac Yard. The National Community Church demonstrated remarkable adaptability.
A significant step happened in 2011. The church purchased a historic theatre on Barracks Row. This century-old building became the central site. It hosted multiple services. It became a vibrant hub for the ever-growing congregation. The building was renovated and reopened in 2016 as the Miracle Theatre.
The National Community Church’s influence stretched beyond its walls. In 2012 it partnered with the Southeast White House. They bought an abandoned building. They transformed it into the DC Dream Center. This community center provided valuable services including a dance studio basketball court and recording studio.
The church’s Easter 2014 service attracted 800 congregants at the Lincoln Theatre. This marked the establishment of another weekly service location. By April 2014 over 3000 people attended services across seven locations. The National Community Church’s growth was truly impressive.
A further expansion happened with the purchase of the Navy Yard Car Barn in late 2014. This was renovated. It reopened in 2021 as Capital Turnaround an 850-seat auditorium. This impressive facility is used for Sunday services. Capital Turnaround is a testament to the church’s ambition and enduring impact.
In 2023 the National Community Church led an Easter sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial. This event took over a tradition started by Capital Church in 1979. It showcased the church’s growing prominence and its commitment to community engagement. The National Community Church’s journey is one of remarkable growth innovation and community service.
