From a grand vision to a quiet retreat. This is the story of the Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken IV. Originally envisioned as part of a massive waterway connecting the Danube and Oder rivers, the Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken IV now serves a much different purpose. The idea of this canal dates back to the 14th century, when Emperor Charles IV dreamed of a navigable route linking these two major rivers. This dream persisted through the centuries, with more concrete plans emerging in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Donau-Oder-Kanal project gained momentum during the National Socialist era. In 1939, Rudolf Hess inaugurated the Gleiwitzer Kanal (formerly the Adolf-Hitler-Kanal) and initiated the first stage of the Donau-Oder-Kanal. The Austrian section, planned to stretch 40 kilometers from Vienna to Angern an der March, was only partially completed. Only a few kilometers were built near Vienna’s Lobau and Groß-Enzersdorf. These remnants, known as DOK I-IV, tell a tale of interrupted ambition. Donau-Oder-Kanal Becken IV, located southeast of Vienna, is now part of a small garden settlement. Along with DOK III, it’s primarily used for recreational purposes, like swimming and fishing. Imagine the bustling waterway that was once intended here. Now picture the tranquil oasis it has become. This transformation reflects the complex history of the Donau-Oder-Kanal project, a testament to changing priorities and the enduring power of nature.
