Let’s step back in time. The Mitaka Police Station wasn’t always here. It started in 1948. It became independent from the Musashino Police Station. At the time, it was known as the Mitaka Town Police Station. This early station was in Kami-renjaku.
In 1950, Mitaka became a city. The station’s name changed to Mitaka City Police Station. A major shift occurred in 1954. The Police Law revisions led to its integration. It became the Metropolitan Police Department’s Mitaka Police Station.
The station moved to a new building in 1969. This location was in Kami-renjaku. A temporary building in Kitano housed the station in 2003. The current building was completed in 2005. It stands on this very spot.
The Mitaka Police Station covers all of Mitaka City. It has several substations. You will find the Mitaka Ekimae Koban near Mitaka Station. There is also the Kitakawari Koban. Other Koban include Kami-renjaku, Mitaka-dai, and Inokashira Koen Ekimae. There are also several police boxes. These include, Manganbashi, Kitano, Tenmondai-shita, Nakahara, and Karasuyama.
The Mitaka Police Station has been involved in serious cases. These include the Inokashira Park Bara-bara murder. Also, the Mitaka City izakaya deputy manager robbery murder case. Another is the Shimorenjaku drugstore robbery murder case. The suspect remains at large.
In 2023, an incident brought the Mitaka Police Station into the news. A patrol officer was arrested. He was suspected of stealing cash from a residence.
