How about a trip to Kleinburg’s early days? Kleinburg is an unincorporated village in Vaughan. It offers a blend of history, art, and nature.
Kleinburg was founded in 1848. John Nicholas Kline a German-Canadian settler established it. Some say Kleinburg means “small castle” in German. Others believe it’s “small mountain” describing the landscape.
Kline built a sawmill and gristmill. These mills became Kleinburg’s heart. The mills served farmers and boosted commerce. Kline also served as Justice of the Peace. He helped establish Kleinburg’s first school.
In 1852, the Howland brothers bought Kline’s property. The Howland family were very successful. Henry Stark Howland became Kleinburg’s first postmaster. He was also Reeve of Vaughan Township.
By 1860, Kleinburg grew. It included tradespeople like shoemakers and doctors. By 1870, more businesses opened including chemists and butchers. Kleinburg became a popular stop for travelers going to Toronto.
Kleinburg has a rich tradition. The Binder Twine Festival began in the late 1800s. Charles Shaw Jr gave farmers binder twine. This turned into a community celebration. Today it features games food and fun.
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is south of Kleinburg. Robert and Signe McMichael donated their log home and land. Since 1966, it has showcased the Group of Seven. It also includes Indigenous art. Members of the Group of Seven are buried on the property.
Kleinburg has been used in film. Cinespace Film Studios was once located here. The Forest Rangers TV show was filmed here. The movie The Sentinel was filmed at the McMichael Gallery. Camp David scenes were shot there.
Pierre Berton Canadian author lived in Kleinburg for 50 years. Former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson also called Kleinburg home. Kleinburg is also home to several parks. These parks offer natural beauty.
Kleinburg Public Elementary School has a long history. The original building was demolished in 2008. A new school opened in 2009. Kleinburg is a place where history art and community come together. Take a stroll and explore its charm.
