A church bell tolls. Its resonant sound echoes through the city. It’s the bell of Saint John’s Episcopal Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s the “Church of the Presidents”.

Saint John’s Episcopal Church stands proudly in Washington DC. Its history is intertwined with the nation’s story. For over two centuries it has witnessed history unfold. Presidents and prominent figures have walked its hallowed halls.

Designed by Benjamin Latrobe the church opened in 1816. Latrobe also designed parts of the US Capitol. He was a brilliant architect of the early national period. The church’s design is a beautiful example of Federal architecture. It’s a Greek Revival style building. Many additions and alterations have been made over the years. Yet it remains a stunning example of its era.

Every president since James Madison has attended at least one service here. A prayer book holds the signatures of almost every president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Richard Nixon’s signature is notably absent. This book commemorates the inauguration services they attended. President Madison started a tradition. He selected a special pew for his private use. This “president’s pew” has been maintained ever since. Though presidents often sit in the front pew for special events.

In 1822 a bell cast by Paul Revere’s son was installed. It weighs nearly 1000 pounds. It served not just as a church bell but as a neighborhood alarm. This bell is one of only two Revere bells in Washington. And it’s the only one still in continuous service. Legend whispers that when this bell tolls for a notable person six ghostly figures appear in the president’s pew at midnight.

During the George Floyd protests in 2020 the church basement suffered a fire. The fire was contained to the nursery. But it highlights a challenging time in the church’s long history. Despite this setback Saint John’s Episcopal Church remains a vital part of the Washington DC community. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It stands as a powerful symbol of American history. Its beauty and significance draw visitors from around the globe. It is more than a place of worship. It’s a living monument to the nation’s past.
