“Two brothers’ legacy” whispers the wind through the trees. This is Náměstí Bratří Jandusů. It’s not just a square. It’s a living testament to Jaroslav and František Jandus. These two men were anti-fascist fighters. They were also pre-war activists in the labor movement. Their names now grace this very place. A place once known as Masaryk Square. Then it was Peace Square. But those names felt insufficient. They didn’t truly capture the spirit of this location. The square’s current name finally reflects its history. It honors the courageous brothers’ fight for justice.
Look around. See the All Saints Church. Its original gothic heart was reshaped by the Renaissance. Then in 1740-1743 it was radically rebuilt. The high and late Baroque style is breathtaking. The architect Tomas Vojtech Budil oversaw this transformation. The church’s towering prism rises majestically above the nave. Within the walls of the old cemetery stand baroque sandstone sculptures. They depict the Virgin Mary and saints. Among them are St Florian St Roch St Sebastian and St František Xaverský.
Across the square stands a historic school building. It’s a multi-story structure. It has watched generations of children learn and grow. On the opposite side stands house number 33. A plaque proudly proclaims the birthplace of Ota Bubeníček. This remarkable man was both a painter and a puppet master. His legacy is just as powerful as the Jandus brothers’. He lived from 1871 to 1962.
In the center of Náměstí Bratří Jandusů lies a small park. There you’ll find a sculptural group. It features St Jan Nepomucký. It dates from around 1730. The statue stands serene. It silently observes the square’s bustling life. It’s a timeless figure in this historical setting.
