Recall the name Alexander Pushkin. The statue before us commemorates a man considered by many to be Russia’s greatest poet and the father of modern Russian literature. This monument is more than just bronze. It represents a cultural bridge between Moscow and Washington D.C.

The Alexander Pushkin Statue stands proudly on the campus of George Washington University. It is located at the corner of 22nd Street and H Street. Take a good look. The statue was a gift from the government of Moscow. It was part of a cultural exchange. In return, a statue of the American poet Walt Whitman was erected in Moscow.

Ground was broken for the Alexander Pushkin Statue on June 6, 1999. This date marked the 200th anniversary of Pushkin’s birth. The statue was dedicated on September 20, 2000. Russian and U.S. officials gathered for the event.

Alexander Bourganov created the Alexander Pushkin Statue. The statue depicts Pushkin in front of a tall column. Perched atop the column is the winged horse Pegasus. Pegasus symbolizes poetry and creative inspiration.

It is said that the Alexander Pushkin Statue is the first monument in the United States that commemorates a Russian literary figure. James W. Symington proposed the idea. He was the Chairman of the American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation.

Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born in Moscow on June 6, 1799. He came from Russian nobility. He published his first poem at fifteen. Pushkin joined the first graduating class of the Imperial Lyceum near Saint Petersburg. His talent was widely recognized.

After school, Pushkin became a spokesman for literary radicals. This angered the government. He was transferred from the capital. After five years in exile, he petitioned Tsar Nicholas I for release. His request was granted. However, some of his writings were found in the possession of radicals. Pushkin was under strict government control. During this time, he wrote some of his most famous works.

Pushkin regained favor with the government. Many speculated it was because of his marriage. He married the young Nataliya Nikolaevna Goncharova. She was sixteen and he was almost thirty. The Tsar himself admired Natalya. She accepted Pushkin’s proposal after assurances that the government would not persecute him. Later, the Tsar gave Pushkin a court title. The poet felt humiliated. He thought the Tsar only did it so his wife could attend court events.

In 1837, Pushkin faced rumors that his wife was having an affair. He challenged her alleged lover to a duel. Pushkin was notoriously touchy about his honor. He fought twenty-nine duels in his life. This duel would be his last. He was shot and died two days later on February 10, 1837. He was only thirty-seven years old.

Despite his short life, Pushkin was a prolific writer. He wrote narrative poems, verse novels, dramas, prose, and fairy tales in verse. His writing is complex. Works that were only a hundred pages long require two volumes to translate fully into English. Due to translation difficulties, Pushkin’s verse remains largely unknown to English readers. In Russia, he is considered their greatest poet.

The Alexander Pushkin Statue stands as a reminder of his enduring legacy. It is a symbol of cultural exchange and the power of literature to transcend borders. Take a moment to appreciate this tribute to a literary giant. Consider the impact of his words and the stories they continue to tell.
