A mischievous grin splits the sea monster’s face. This is Sjöguden the Sea God. He sits proudly on Skeppsbron overlooking the waters of Stockholm. Right here before you stands a masterpiece by Carl Milles.

Created in 1913 Sjöguden wasn’t installed until 1930. It’s made of red granite. Milles envisioned ten such sculptures. They were to be placed along the city’s quays. They would serve as mooring points for ships. Only Sjöguden came to fruition. It is a testament to the artist’s vision. He was also inspired by German influences during its creation. This was Milles’ last sculpture featuring such smooth surfaces.

Sjöguden depicts a smiling sea creature. It’s embracing a shy mermaid. The sculpture is quite massive. It’s 1.8 meters high 1.1 meters wide and 1.1 meters deep. Its black granite base is 0.5 meters high. Rings on the base’s sides were intended for mooring ships’ ropes.

This is more than just a sculpture. It marks a transition in Milles’ style. It’s the end of his smooth-surfaced creations. It heralds a new direction. His future works would feature the aquatic world. Sjöguden represents a unique blend of his past and his future artistic endeavors. It embodies Stockholm’s rich maritime history and artistic legacy.

Look closely. Notice the detail. Feel the weight of history in this magnificent piece of art. The Sea God of Stockholm welcomes you to this spot. Remember this moment as you explore this captivating city.
