Initially, the school focused solely on music. However, in 1966, a dance department was added. Later, in 1988, a literary-dramatic arts program began. Finally, in 2007, a visual arts department completed the school’s offerings.

The Z\u00e1kladn\u00ed um\u011bleck\u00e1 \u0161kola Jana Hanu\u0161e has moved a few times. Its first home was on n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed Svobody. After four years, it moved to Majakovsk\u00e9ho Street. This street is now called Pell\u00e9ova. In 2001, due to restitution, the school relocated again. It found a new space in the J. A. Komensk\u00e9ho Elementary School. This space was renovated to meet the school’s needs.

For over 60 years, Z\u00e1kladn\u00ed um\u011bleck\u00e1 \u0161kola Jana Hanu\u0161e has educated thousands of children. Some of these students have become professional artists. The school fosters talent. It nurtures creativity.

In 2006-07, the school received an honorary name. With the family’s permission, it was named after Jan Hanu\u0161. He was a significant Czech composer of the 20th century. He was also a long-time resident of Prague 6. The school proudly bears his name. It honors his legacy.

In 2015, Z\u00e1kladn\u00ed um\u011bleck\u00e1 \u0161kola Jana Hanu\u0161e established the International Harp Competition. It is named after Professor Karel Patras. The competition occurs every two years. Participants come from the Czech Republic. They also come from Slovakia and other European countries.
