Tokyo Fukasawa Fudoin Temple is a branch of Fo Guang Shan. Fo Guang Shan is a major Buddhist organization from Taiwan. The organization responded to the needs of Chinese people in Japan. They wished to learn about Buddhism. The temple was first named Fo Guang Shan Tokyo Branch Temple. It was Fo Guang Shan’s first branch in Japan. The opening ceremony took place on May 30 1993.
Fo Guang Shan’s core principles guide the temple. These principles promote education culture charity and Buddhist practice. They foster inner peace. Tokyo Fukasawa Fudoin Temple actively engages with the community. It interacts with other temples religious groups and local organizations. In 1999 the temple received official recognition from Tokyo. It became the Religious Corporation Rinchi Sect Fo Guang Shan Tokyo Temple.
The original temple building became outdated. It lacked space for activities. In 2005 reconstruction began on the same site. The new temple opened on June 10 2007. A grand ceremony marked the occasion. Dignitaries from various sectors attended. Master Hsing Yun shared words of wisdom. He described the temple as a gas station for life. It is a school for moral character. It is also a department store of compassion patience harmony and giving. He hoped it would strengthen ties between Taiwan and Japan.
The rebuilt temple has four floors above ground and two below. It houses the Hall of the Great Hero. Here they enshrine Sakyamuni Buddha. The temple also includes offices a tea room guest rooms and parking. It features a Five Senses Hall a large dining hall meeting rooms and computer and dance classrooms.
