Shrouded in verdant foliage, Graces Stream meanders through the heart of Remutaka Forest Park. Right here, where the air hums with the music of nature, once stood a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Graces Stream Campsite, beloved by locals and adventurers alike, was a place where the city’s clamor faded into the tranquil symphony of birdsong and rustling leaves. For years, laughter and stories filled this space. Campfires crackled under the watchful gaze of ancient trees. Hikers weary from their journey on the nearby Clay Ridge Track found solace and rest on the banks of the gurgling stream. Sadly, Graces Stream Campsite exists no more. Its very popularity proved to be its downfall. The constant influx of visitors took its toll. The ground, compacted by countless footsteps and tents, choked the life from the beech trees. The risk of falling trees grew, casting a shadow of danger over the once-peaceful haven. In a poignant turn of events, the Department of Conservation made the difficult decision to permanently close the campsite in 2022. Today, only whispers of laughter and ghostly embers of campfires remain. Graces Stream, however, flows on. A reminder of the delicate balance between our love for nature and the importance of preserving its fragile beauty.
