What echoes do the walls of the Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center hold? We stand before a place brimming with stories, a testament to resilience and cultural richness. The Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub, an anchor in the Gateway Arts District. It’s located in North Brentwood, the first African American incorporated municipality in Prince George’s County, established back in 1924. This museum is dedicated to preserving the multicultural heritage of the county. It achieves this through a dynamic blend of art, research, music, dance, and both virtual and in-person exhibits. The Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center has a vision. It aspires to be recognized globally for its unique approach to documenting, interpreting, and presenting African American history and culture, both locally and regionally. Interestingly, while the museum’s permanent home is under construction in North Brentwood, its spirit thrives. Gallery 110 at the Gateway Arts Center in neighboring Brentwood currently serves as the interim space for exhibitions and public programs. This museum emerged from the passionate efforts of the North Brentwood Historical Society. Starting in 1991, they began collecting oral histories, documenting Brentwood’s unique status as the oldest incorporated African American municipality in the Washington area. The society’s work culminated in “Footsteps from North Brentwood,” an exhibition displayed at the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum and the State House in Annapolis. They later published “Minding Our Own Business,” an oral history celebrating the town’s entrepreneurs. The Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center continues to build on this legacy. It offers a rich tapestry of experiences. From exhibits showcasing the history of Chocolate Cities to the vibrant Winter Motherland festival celebrating Black holiday traditions, the museum pulses with life. It’s a place where history comes alive and the future is envisioned. The Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center is more than a museum. It’s a living testament to a community’s enduring spirit.
