It’s here, at the end of a gravel road bordering Playa Larga Nature Reserve, that the journey begins. This hiking trail winds through a southern beech forest, offering glimpses of the rugged beauty that defines this region. The path is well-marked, but the terrain can be uneven. Sturdy footwear is essential as you navigate the roots and gentle slopes. The air is crisp, carrying the scent of the sea and the damp earth of the forest floor. The trail hugs the coast, revealing the unique ecosystem of the Beagle Channel. Guindo trees mingle with canelo (with its white flowers), leña dura, and notro (bearing vibrant red blooms). After about a kilometer, the trees open to reveal a breathtaking panoramic view of the Beagle Channel. A perfect spot to pause and take in the scenery. The name “Baliza Escarpados” also echoes a maritime tragedy. On January 8, 1975, the Argentine Navy launch “Lancha Packewaia” struck a rock near here. The launch, named after a bay on Gable Island, was supporting an anthropological campaign for CADIC-CONICET. Its wreckage lies beneath the waves, a poignant reminder of the power of the sea. Ironically, this accident gave birth to the Beagle Channel Archaeological Project. Researchers, honoring the sunken vessel, named their study site after it. The Lancha Packewaia, lost to the Beagle Channel, inadvertently opened a window into the region’s rich past.
