“A pond with a dark past?” a curious child once asked his mother while standing beside Vinořský rybník. “It looks so peaceful now.” Indeed, Vinořský rybník, also known as Biologický rybník, now rests serenely within the Vinořský park, a 1.5-hectare oasis reflecting the sky. Yet, this picturesque pond carries a story of environmental damage and recovery. Imagine, until the late 20th century, this seemingly tranquil water body bore the invisible scars of heavy metal contamination. The culprit? Industrial runoff, particularly from factories in nearby Kbely, laced the Vinořský potok, which feeds the pond, with cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc, nickel, and lead. The levels of cadmium pollution were among the highest globally, turning the pond into a silent reservoir of toxins. The contamination reached its peak in the Vinořský rybník. Analysis revealed a shocking accumulation of heavy metals in the sediment. Nine tons of cadmium, 21 tons of chromium, 15 tons of copper, 73 tons of zinc, four tons of nickel, and 1.5 tons of lead lay buried beneath the surface. The concentration of cadmium in the top layer of the sediment even exceeded 2000 ppm. The realization of this environmental disaster spurred an extensive cleanup operation. In the late summer of 1997, a large-scale remediation project began. The pond was painstakingly dredged, removing contaminated sediment up to 1.5 meters deep to ensure the remaining cadmium levels didn’t exceed 25 ppm. A staggering 19,380 tons of toxic sediment was removed and transported to a special landfill. The total cost of this massive undertaking reached approximately 11.5 million Czech koruna. Following the cleanup and refill, a barrier was constructed upstream in 1998 to trap incoming sediment and prevent further contamination. Today, Vinořský rybník stands as a testament to the resilience of nature and the power of human intervention. Though the pond may not be a biodiversity hotspot, its role in the Vinořský park and as a retention pond highlights its value. The extensive cleanup allows the pond to serve its original purpose. Vinořský rybník supports extensive fish farming, creating a balance between the fish population and the natural ecosystem. It also serves as a picturesque spot for visitors, offering a tranquil escape and a reminder of a battle won against environmental degradation.
