Built on the grounds of a Roman military camp, Sankt Johannes Deutz whispers tales of resilience. Sankt Johannes Deutz stands in Deutz, Cologne. This area was once known as Castrum Divitia. A Roman Emperor, Constantine I, established this camp in 310 AD. It was strategically positioned across the Rhine from Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. A bridge connected the two settlements. The name “Deutz” itself echoes this Roman past. It evolved from “Divitia,” the camp’s original name. Imagine the Roman soldiers stationed here, guarding the Rhine’s vital crossing. Sankt Johannes Deutz wasn’t always a church. In 1002, Archbishop Heribert transformed a castle on the site into a Benedictine monastery. This monastery became a hub of learning. Influential theologians like Rupert of Deutz walked its halls. Deutz faced turbulent times. It was ravaged by fires in 1376, 1445, and 1583. Its fortifications, granted by the archbishop of Cologne in 1230, were dismantled in 1678 after the Treaties of Nijmegen. They were later rebuilt and finally razed in 1888. The area also played a role in industrial innovation. In 1869, Nicolaus August Otto and Eugen Langen moved their company to Deutz. They renamed it Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz. This marked the birthplace of the Otto engine, the ancestor of modern internal combustion engines. Finally, in 1888, Deutz became part of Cologne. Sankt Johannes Deutz stands as a testament to the area’s layered history, from Roman camp to monastic center and finally a part of modern Cologne. It silently witnesses the flow of time and the constant changes of the city.
