Lost in the fog, a ship met its fate. The S.S. Kakapo, a grand steamship weighing 665 tons, found its final resting place on Long Beach in 1900. She wasn’t meant to be here. The S.S. Kakapo, a schooner-rigged steamship, was sailing from the United Kingdom to Sydney, Australia. Her cargo holds were full of coal, destined for the bustling Australian port. Then, on May 25th, a fierce north-westerly gale descended upon the Cape of Storms. The S.S. Kakapo was enveloped in fog and driving rain. Visibility dropped to near zero. The inexperienced Danish captain, on his maiden voyage, made a grave error. He mistook Chapman’s Peak for Cape Point. He ordered the ship to turn, believing they were navigating the treacherous waters around the Cape. Instead, they sailed directly towards the sandy shores of Long Beach. The S.S. Kakapo ran aground. Miraculously, no lives were lost. The crew even managed to walk ashore onto the sand. However, the ship was stuck fast. All attempts to refloat her failed. The captain, mortified by his mistake, reportedly refused to leave the ship. Some stories say he lived aboard the wrecked vessel for three years. Today, the remains of the S.S. Kakapo still rest on Long Beach. The boiler, ribs, and rudders remain. They stand as ghostly reminders of this maritime tragedy. The shifting sands reveal different parts of the wreck at different times. This creates an ever-changing exhibition for those who venture out to see it. The S.S. Kakapo’s story serves as a cautionary tale. It reminds us of the power of nature and the importance of careful navigation.
