“Chemistry is not just about mixing things. It’s about understanding the world around us.” Imagine Professor Paul Daniel Hahn declaring this to his students. Right here, we stand before the PD Hahn Building at the University of Cape Town. This building stands as a testament to a man who revolutionized science education in South Africa.

Paul Daniel Hahn, born in 1849, was a pioneer. He transformed the way natural sciences were taught here. He arrived at the South African College in 1875. The college later became the University of Cape Town. Hahn became the Jamison Professor of Experimental Physics and Practical Chemistry in 1876. He later became Professor of Chemistry in 1893.

Hahn immediately started campaigning for better facilities. Thanks to a donation from Mrs S.B.E. Jamison, a new chemistry laboratory was built in 1881. This marked a turning point for science at the college. Mrs. Jamison also donated money to establish the Jamison Chair. Hahn ensured the natural sciences became a vital part of the curriculum.

Picture this: a classroom filled with eager students. Hahn, with his unique teaching style, inspires them. He was instrumental in opening doors for women in education. In 1886, he admitted four women to his chemistry class as a trial. Their exceptional work led the college to admit women full-time in 1887. This was in honor of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Hahn played a key role in establishing a mining school at the college. This school later merged with the Johannesburg School of Mines. He and Professor Lewis toured the Transvaal and Kimberley in 1894. They raised money for a new physics laboratory. Hahn also actively supported establishing a medical school at the college in 1911.

The PD Hahn Building itself has a story. It was named in his honor. In 2011, a display was created at the building’s south-side entrance. It commemorates Hahn’s life, the building’s history and his role in accepting women.

Hahn was involved in the Cape government’s purchase of Groot Constantia in 1882. This served as a model wine farm. He served on government commissions studying the phylloxera disease in Cape vineyards. He campaigned for the development of the state forestry school. He also advocated for agricultural education at Victoria College, now Stellenbosch University. For years, he was the only chemical analyst and consulting chemist in South Africa.

The German government recognized Hahn’s service to science and education. They awarded him the title of Königlicher Hofrat. He was a member of the Royal Society of South Africa. He founded the Cape Chemical Society and chaired the South African Society for the Advancement of Science.

Originally, the One Button Studios were located in the PD Hahn building. These studios offered automated recording facilities for lectures. Due to ventilation needs during COVID-19, they moved to the Steve Biko building.

Paul Daniel Hahn died in 1919. The PD Hahn Building stands as a reminder of his dedication. He shaped science education and opened doors for future generations. It also embodies his commitment to inclusivity and progress.
