Picture this: a bustling Zurich district. This is Schwamendingen. Its history stretches back to the 5th century. An Alemannic settlement named after one Swuamund. It’s a story woven through time.

Schwamendingen was once an independent community. It grew from a small village of ten houses in 915. By the 9th century it was given to the Grossmünster. This powerful Zurich monastery played a significant role in Schwamendingen’s early life. The Grossmünster even gifted the village a church bell in 1461. A tangible link to the past.

The Reformation reached Schwamendingen in 1526. Hans Schmid became its first Protestant pastor. This marked a turning point in the district’s religious landscape. It demonstrated the shift from Catholic rule to Protestant influence. Schwamendingen and Oerlikon gained independence in 1872. This independence was short-lived however.

In 1934 both Schwamendingen and Oerlikon were absorbed into Zurich. They became part of the city’s expansion. This incorporation was part of a larger wave of annexations. Other areas like Seebach Affoltern Witikon Höngg Altstetten and Albisrieden also joined the city. It changed Schwamendingen forever.

The district has evolved. Nowadays Schwamendingen is part of Zurich North. This includes district numbers 11 and 12. Both districts are based in the Glatt Valley. Its current population is approximately 32500. A significant portion of the population are immigrants. They have enriched the multicultural fabric of the district. Many originate from countries like Turkey Eritrea Somalia Syria Congo Tunisia and Sri Lanka.

Schwamendingen has seen growth and change. It has been shaped by its history and its people. Today it thrives within the larger context of Zurich. The A1 motorway runs through the district. It’s a modern infrastructure that has greatly impacted the district’s character.

To mitigate the effects of noise and pollution a 900-meter enclosure was built. This substantial undertaking was jointly funded by the city canton and country. It’s a testament to the community’s dedication to improve its environment.

Schwamendingen boasts tram lines 7 and 9 and bus lines 61 62 75 79 94 and 787. And the Stettbach railway station offers easy access to Dűbendorf. And connections to Zurich’s broader transport network.

Schwamendingen. A district deeply rooted in history. A district thriving in the present. A district you have now experienced firsthand.
