Huddinge kommun is more than just a modern municipality. It is a place where ancient traditions meet contemporary life. The very name “Huddinge” might come from “Uddung”. It refers to the area’s earliest inhabitants during the Iron Age. They lived along Lake Mälaren’s shores.
Imagine these early residents. When danger threatened, they would climb to high ground. There, they lit beacons to warn others of approaching enemy ships. This wasn’t unique to Huddinge. Transportation changed Huddinge forever. The western trunk railway between Stockholm and Södertälje opened in 1860. It had stations in Huddinge and Tumba. This railway changed Huddinge from a rural area into a commuter suburb.
Between 1910 and 1930, Huddinge saw the biggest population growth around Stockholm. People moved from Stockholm to escape the city. They settled near the train station.
