Crumbling concrete. That’s the first impression of Edifício Meia Nove. This isn’t a postcard-perfect building. It’s a 23-story structure in the heart of São Paulo. A building with a troubled past. A building known as the “Caveirão”.

Edifício Meia Nove. The name itself hints at something unfinished. Something incomplete. For years it stood abandoned. A skeleton of steel and concrete. A monument to stalled ambition. Or perhaps a symbol of neglect. Located on Rua do Carmo number 93. It was a source of danger. A threat to the safety of the community. Its precarious structure posed a risk.

The story of Edifício Meia Nove is a legal battle. A struggle between the city and its owner. Rivaldo Sant’Anna the owner. He ignored court orders to demolish the building. This went on for years. Since 2018 the city has fought to have it torn down. The city argued the building was a safety hazard. Finally in 2025 justice prevailed. The court ordered the demolition of Edifício Meia Nove. The city will now demolish it. Sant’Anna will pay for the demolition. He will also pay fines for defying previous court orders.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Another abandoned building collapsed in São Paulo in 2018. The Edifício Wilton Paes Almeida. That tragedy claimed seven lives. It underscored the dangers of urban decay. It serves as a stark warning. A warning about the importance of maintaining structures. A warning about the responsibility of property owners. The collapse of that building also left hundreds of families homeless.

Edifício Meia Nove isn’t just a building. It’s a reminder. A reminder of the consequences of inaction. It’s a reminder of the importance of safety. It’s a reminder of the balance between development and responsibility. Soon Edifício Meia Nove will be gone. Reduced to rubble. Its story will be a cautionary tale. A tale of neglect and ultimately. A tale of justice. But even now as we stand here before its weathered façade. We can almost feel the weight of its history. We can almost hear the echoes of its past.
