On a bustling avenue in the heart of São Paulo, a grand edifice stands tall. This is the Catedral Metodista de São Paulo. Its story begins not here, but in the Largo do Tesouro in 1889. A missionary named J.J. Ransom began the Methodist work in São Paulo there. The first official congregation formed in 1884 in a rented space above a jewelry store on Rua 15 de Novembro. The Catedral Metodista de São Paulo’s beginnings were humble. It started with just four members: Bernardo Miranda, Frank Bellinger, Giovani Berninni, and Clementina Berninni.

The congregation moved several times, from a large house on Rua Brigadeiro Tobias to Rua Senador Queiroz. They even held services in a coffee shop on Rua Conceição. During this nomadic period, music played a vital role. Reverend Miguel Dickie, his wife Julia (a skilled pianist), and other musically talented members formed an orchestra known for its beautiful harmony. A generous donation from Antonia Bueno de Camargo finally allowed the Methodists to purchase their first property. It was located in Largo do Arouche in 1893.

This location proved unsuitable, leading to another move to Largo 7 de Setembro. Finally, the Methodists found their permanent home on Avenida Liberdade. The cornerstone for the Catedral Metodista de São Paulo was laid in 1920. The first service in the new building was held in a temporary hall downstairs in 1921. The grand opening of the Catedral Metodista de São Paulo took place in 1922. Reverend Miguel Dickie, a key figure in the church’s journey, presided over the ceremony.

The building wasn’t fully consecrated until 1928, after all debts from its construction were paid. This marked another triumph for Reverend Dickie. In 1930, a milestone was reached. The Methodist Church of Brazil gained autonomy from the North American Methodist Church. This historic event coincided with the election and consecration of Brazil’s first Methodist bishop, William Tarboux.

The Catedral Metodista de São Paulo continued to grow. It served as a starting point for other congregations. It also became a central location for various events. This led to the construction of an educational building in 1960, later named after Alarico Mattos. The church celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1972 with over 4,500 members. In 1984, under the leadership of Reverend Silas Pereira Barbosa, a new building was constructed next to the church. Today, that building bears his name. In 2005, in recognition of its historical significance and to facilitate much-needed restorations, the Igreja Metodista Central de São Paulo was elevated to cathedral status, becoming the Catedral Metodista de São Paulo. This was a testament to the church’s enduring presence and influence in São Paulo.
