Welcome to the Abisso I di Gropada. It is a place that whispers tales of geological wonders. It calls to those who dare to venture into the depths of the earth. This isn’t just a cave. It’s a testament to the powerful forces that have shaped the Carso.
The Abisso I di Gropada is located a short distance from the road connecting Gropada to Basovizza. Speleologists find this area particularly interesting. They explore various caves or “abissi” in this karst region. The terrain’s unique features probably relate to the subterranean Timavo River’s course.
Let’s talk numbers for a moment. The main entrance of Abisso I di Gropada sits at 412 meters above sea level. This entrance is not the only interesting thing. The cave’s planimetric development extends 41 meters. The cave drops to a depth of 125 meters. The bottom of the cave rests at 287 meters above sea level.
Imagine descending into this abyss. You will encounter a wide chasm with steep sides at the entrance. The south side offers a relatively easy descent. At the bottom a small drop leads to a short ascending corridor. This corridor opens into the deep inner shaft or p.100.
The p.100 plunges almost vertically. There are small steps where you can barely pause. The shaft ends on a detrital slope closing off the cavity.
There is also a lateral branch. You can find it through a window partially hidden by a rock blade on p.100. It is about 30 meters from the start. Getting there involves a exposed traverse approximately 30m. You will find it to the right as you descend from the main shaft. After a short climb of about 2 meters, you’ll reach a small chamber. Inside among calcified boulders is a very narrow chimney. This leads to another small chamber. Above it is another chimney. This one rises about 5 meters. Stuck masses close it. Due to its dangerous condition, visiting this part is not advised.
There’s also a lateral chimney. About 50 meters from the opening of p.100 a pendulum movement to the right from a terrace will get you there. It leads to a blind hollow. Above this hollow is a chimney rising about 60 meters, 40 of which have been surveyed. It features both eroded and calcified sections.
