“A school with two locations?” That is what many newcomers ask about Kungsholmens grundskola. It is indeed one school but it is split into two units. Kungsholmens grundskola is a municipal school for primary and lower secondary education.
Let’s start with a little orientation. The school has two buildings on Kungsholmen in Stockholm. You will find one building at Sankt Göransgatan 73. The other one is located at Sankt Göransgatan 145.
Kungsholmens grundskola is huge. Around 1,200 students attend the school. There are 43 classes for primary school students. There are also four special needs classes. The location at Sankt Göransgatan 73 teaches about 1,000 students. These students are in preschool up to year 6. The other location teaches students in years 7 to 9. About 200 students attend this unit. Kungsholmens grundskola has about 170 employees.
The building at Sankt Göransgatan 73 has an interesting history. It was built in 1946. Paul Hedqvist was the architect. It was originally built for Stockholm’s city commercial college. Hedqvist designed a simple four-story building. It features yellow brick facades. A fifth story lets light into the central hall. Each floor has balconies overlooking the hall. Classrooms, typing rooms, display rooms, and a lecture hall opened onto these balconies. In 2010, it became Kungsholmens grundskola. The Stockholm City Museum has given the school a green marking. This means it is considered especially valuable. It is important historically and culturally. It also matters aesthetically.
In 2013, the owner decided to expand the school. Skolfastigheter i Stockholm AB managed the project. They carefully renovated building A. They created new rooms with different layouts. A new wing was built at an angle to the south. This is building B. It has five floors. A glazed connecting building links it to building A. The new entrance is in this connecting building. An underground sports hall was built under the new section. The facades are gray brick and whitewashed plaster. Cedervalls arkitektbyrå designed the expansion. The schoolyard was also redesigned.
The school building at Kellgrensgatan was built in 1966. Tecab Konsulterande Arkitekter designed it. Anders Tengbom and Kurt Walles were the architects. It was originally a nursing school for S:t Göran’s Hospital. The red brick building is part of a larger complex. This complex was built for the hospital. Kungsholmens grundskola has been teaching here since 2000. It houses years 6 to 9. From 1971 to 1998, it was a nursing school. The Stockholm County Council ran it. The adjacent building once housed student housing. Both buildings have green markings from the City Museum.
Kungsholmens grundskola aims to create a secure environment. They want to boost students’ reading comprehension. The school works with Djurgårdens skolidrott. This gives students a chance to play soccer. It teaches teamwork and following rules. Kungsholmens grundskola also values healthy meals. The school kitchen is run independently. They create menus that appeal to the students. At least 50 percent of the ingredients are organic. There are always meat, chicken, fish, and vegetarian options. A large salad bar is also available.
Kungsholmens grundskola is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a place where students learn. They grow and prepare for the future.
