Kościół pw św Izydora in Marki wasn’t always here. The village of Marki was small in the 19th century. Its residents relied on churches in nearby towns for services. But as Marki grew thanks to booming brickworks and textile mills the need for a local church became pressing. The idea was born from the industrial expansion. It was driven by the hopes and prayers of the growing community.
The story of Kościół pw św Izydora begins in the late 1800s. Local residents spearheaded the project. They received generous support from unlikely allies. The Briggs brothers English industrialists who owned a nearby wool mill donated significantly. Even though they were Protestant they were committed to the community. Other benefactors included local families and cegielnie owners. They contributed land materials and funds. The construction was a communal effort.
The church’s construction wasn’t a simple process. Securing permits from the Tsarist authorities took years. The foundation stone was laid in 1899. The external walls were completed within seven months. Construction continued until 1903. Two bells cast by the Zwoliński brothers were installed that year. A 2.5-meter crucifix adorned the tower. Flora Briggs a family member of the English investors covered the costs for ironwork and crystal chandeliers. She also provided the oak front doors and a harmonium.
The church designed by Jan Hinz and Józef Dziekoński was consecrated in 1919 by Cardinal Aleksander Kakowski. Despite the church’s existence Russian authorities delayed recognizing the parish. During World War II the tower was destroyed. The church suffered significant damage during the war. Restoration wasn’t completed until 1961. New stained-glass windows were installed only in 1967.
