A haven of hope. That’s what this place represents. This is a safe place for GBV victims in Thimphu Bhutan. Right here in the heart of Thimphu stands a beacon of support for those who have suffered unimaginable trauma.

This isn’t just an office or shelter. It’s a symbol of Bhutan’s unwavering commitment to ending gender-based violence. It’s a space where victims can find solace healing and a path towards a brighter future. Inspired by the Queen’s call for shelter services during the 2020 lockdown this safe haven was established.

The need was undeniable. The COVID-19 pandemic tragically highlighted a sharp increase in GBV cases. RENEW a non-profit organization reported a staggering 37% rise. The lockdowns confined women with their abusers exacerbating an already dire situation. The Multi Sectoral Task Force and Community Based Support System sprung into action. They transformed existing facilities into temporary shelters providing essential food and supplies.

One such volunteer Tshering Lham dedicated herself to this cause. She worked tirelessly to ensure that the municipal office in Tsirang became a safe haven. Her dedication and the commitment of others are a testament to the community’s resilience. This commitment extends far beyond Thimphu. Through collaborative efforts shelters were established across Bhutan’s 20 Dzongkhags.

UNFPA and RENEW played a vital role in training volunteers equipping them with the skills to support survivors. Over 600 volunteers received crucial training on GBV prevention. This training was instrumental in preparing the community for emergencies. It provided volunteers with the confidence to tackle GBV effectively.

The establishment of these safe places signifies Bhutan’s dedication to the Sustainable Development Goals. It demonstrates a commitment to leaving no one behind a commitment that resonates deeply within the community. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also contributed to this vital endeavor funding five of the six shelters established in 2020.

So as you stand before this building remember more than bricks and mortar. You see the culmination of collective effort compassionate action and the unwavering hope for a Bhutan free from gender-based violence. This safe place for GBV victims symbolizes that hope that resilience and that unwavering determination to create a safer future for all.
